Question: I have a 10 year old German Shepard mix/Female/52 pounds/Medium size dog. I took her to the vet about 2 days ago & the vet says she has arthritis :( She gave me Tramadol-20 Tabs or 20 days. And also a sample pack(4) of Rimdayl. I've heard that alot of the prescription medications for arthritis can cause liver damage. A couple of brands I've heard are good choices are : GMC and I believe the other has a ingredient called glucosamine. I'm doing my own research, like reading up on reviews for the best over counter medications that won't cause severe damage or even hopefully any damage. So if any knows or has tried medications that are promising please let me know and thanks alot. *Best answer will be rewarded full points* I'm sorry :( I'm just trying to choose what's best for my dog. I'm new to medications for pets :(

I'll tell you what. My almost 8 year old Bulldog has been on Rimadyl for almost 5 years straight and doing just fine. I also have several friends who's dogs have been on Rimadyl long term. One was a Weim that was on it for almost 10 years and she lived to be 15, believe it or not. Anyway, along with the Rimadyl, my dog gets a Glucosamine/MSM supplement called Glyco-Flex III. I don't get any of this from the Vet. I order it from KV Vet Supply. You CAN also use human Glucosamine/MSM products as it all the same stuff. For her weight, she can start on about 750-1000 mg. per day, give that for about 2 weeks, and then give half that amount daily as a maintenance dosage. When giving the daily amount, split it in half, giving it to her twice daily. My dog does weigh 53 lbs. so I know this dosage is correct for that weight. She has severe Hip Dysplasia and Arthritis. Add: Bunn is correct. You will need bloodwork done twice yearly for the prescription.

Glucosamine and chondroiton are supplements, not medications, but they do help with arthritis when used in conjunction with anti-inflammatory and pain medications. Be sure to purchase a glucosamine supplement made for dogs. Two that I found worked well for my dane before she passed were GlycoFlex and Dasuquin. Though not prescription, I got them through my veterinarian. Yes, anti-inflammatory medications like Rimadyl and pain medications like Tramadol CAN cause liver problems, but it's not as severe as you think. That's why your veterinarian will want to do bloodwork on your dog every 6 months or a year if she's on these meds long term. This way, if there are changes noted in the liver values, the medications can be changed.

There are lots of alternative natural remedies to help, but the first has to be glucosamine with chondroitin & msm. A bioflow collar also helps some dogs, or even a copper collar. There is devils claw, shark cartiledge, green lipped muscle, and various herbal preparations which all help. Some dogs respond well to acupuncture also for arthritis. However at 10 yrs old then quality of life must be the prime concern so don't dismiss the rimadyl.

For the best answers, search on this site https://shorturl.im/axZf8 My dogs have been on glucosamine chondroitin with MSM for years for arthritis. On vet's recommendation, they've taken it as a preventative from the time they were younger, before they showed any signs of problems. They all weigh around 70 pounds and the dose is 500 mg daily. When they were having some problems, their dose went up to 1000 mg daily on a temporary basis only (maximum 6 weeks). If your dog's actually limping, you need to get her x-rayed first to see how severe her arthritis is and to find out what level of meds she needs to keep her pain free. Glucosamine is safe, but you don't know if it's enough to help your golden - your vet can tell you after she's been examined.

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now. If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine. Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid. And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again. I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen. It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis. Today, I want to do the same for you!

You can get them over the counter. Age limit is all about the store's personal preference. One store may have no age limit, while another might make you weight until you're eighteen.
