Question: my friend has it pretty bad....are there any home remedies or herbal remedies for this that work? thanks

I've heard of people having success with a zinc spray or ointment. I get eczema on my scalp and have alot of success with the various zinc shampoos. Eczema and psoriasis are somewhat related. A good quality unscented, sensitive skin body lotion can help keep his skin moist and make it easier to remove the scale build up. Hand lotions applied to the body are even more moisturizing. Slather on the lotion, let it sit awhile, then when he takes a cool shower, it (the scale) can be sloughed off with a pumice stone. Excessive heat from hot showers can aggravate his skin. Sunlight and UV treatments can help, too. Aveeno oat baths can help sooth his skin. Unscented, free & clear laundry soaps with minimal fabric softeners can help his skin too. The perfumes and dyes can aggrivate the psoriasis to soothe the itching and allow the skin to heal. Pegasus is right, it can sometimes be caused by a skin yeast infection, but this should be one of the first things ruled out by a dermatologist as it's one of the easiest causes to detect. The most common culprit for psoriasis is an over-active immune system, so most often a mild topical steroid cream is perscribed for severe instances. Here's some further tips from WebMd # Keep your skin moist and lubricated. # Avoid cold, dry climates. Cold weather may worsen symptoms, while hot, humid weather and sunlight may improve symptoms. (However, hot humid weather may worsen certain types of psoriasis.) # Avoid scratching and picking skin and skin injuries (cuts or scrapes). An injury to the skin can cause psoriasis patches to form anywhere on the body, including the site of the injury. This includes injuries to your nails or nearby skin while trimming your nails. # Avoid stress and anxiety. Stress may cause psoriasis to appear suddenly (flare) or can make symptoms worse, although this has not been proven in studies. # Avoid infection. Infections such as strep throat can cause psoriasis to appear suddenly (called guttate psoriasis), especially in children. # Try to avoid certain medications. Some, including beta-blockers and lithium, have been found to worsen psoriasis symptoms. Tell your doctor you have psoriasis when any medications are prescribed for you. # Limit alcohol. This may help control psoriasis, especially for men. # Don't smoke. Smoking may make you more likely to get psoriasis and may make it more severe. Smoking may also make your symptoms last longer

I recommend drinking chamomile tea about 20 minutes before you go to sleep, this is because it is a natural sedative and it is very easy to find at any supermarket.. Also, you must not worry about falling asleep, the more you think about how bad you need to sleep the harder it will be. I like to watch TV before I sleep and I don't turn it off until I am COMPLETELY ready to go to sleep, to the point where I am dozing off. If you don't have a TV in your room, try music, or reading is great too. And don't worry to much about not being able to sleep, 1 hour of sleep is better than none. Do NOT drink any caffeine, no excuses. Try buying a meditation/relaxation CD, they are fairly cheap and I have found them to be quite effective when I am having trouble sleeping. Try taking a bath or shower before you go to sleep, it might help to relax you. Get as much exercise as you can during the day, but do not exercise within 3 hours of going to sleep. Try not to eat a huge amount, digestion can make sleep harder. Silly as it may sound, natural light is proven to help one sleep better, so try to get a lot of natural light, take a walk if you can, maybe sit in a park or something for a little while. Dont drink alcohol. And lastly, I also somtimes wake up in the middle of the night and what I do is wait about 5 or 10 minutes and give myself a chance to fall asleep again, if I fail to fall back asleep I turn my TV onto sleep and just try to get comfortable and relax. I hope some of these tips help. I really recommend the tea, it helps me a lot. OH, and you could check out Valerian root, I have never used it, but its like a completely natural sleeping pill, well root, but in pill form. I don't know much about it though.

Cut the caffeine off about 4 hours before you go to bed. Have a bed time ritual. Even if the times that you go to bed differ, always do the same things before you go to bed. This helps set in motion your bodies own boot-down. I only get about 4 hours of sleep a night, on the norm. I work nights, and my children are in school, so I have to be up in the morning to get them ready, so I have to just sleep when I can. What I do is I don't ingest any caffeine 4-5 hours before bedtime (generally, I don't eat or drink anything but water after 8pm). When I get home, I get online, check my mail, putz around the internet for about an hour, take a shower, get kids clothes up for the next morning, journal, meditate, sleep. This is my ritual every night. By the time I get to bed, my body knows that it is time to sleep, and many times, I don't move all night long. I wake up in the same exact position that I did when I went to bed 5 or 6 hours earlier. It also helps to have limitations on internet time, and tv time... I believe that everything is ok... in moderation.

One book I read indicated psoriasis can be due to yeast (candida) overgrowth. If this is correct, yogurt, taken internally (eaten) or applied externally, should help. This has to be the no fruit added, plain yogurt.

oatmeal bath or any kind of lotion that has oatmeal in it. Also your friend should go see a doctor if it is really bad they can prescribe a ointment for the breakouts

i've never tried the biggest loser workout vids, but i have a bunch of other ones.... 10 minute solution hot body boot camp is really tough, and it has 5 different workouts to give some variety. body wisdom ultimate body beginning workouts for weight loss is really good too. this is the one i work out to the most. it has 2 different 20 minute boot camp workouts or you can put them together for 40 mins, or the same with the kickboxing workouts, and there is also a weight training workout on there too (but i've never bothered to watch it) self firm flat abs fast is pretty intense. carmen electra's aerobic strip tease is fun and it's actually a really good workout.
