Question: I'm 14, just a little short of 5 foot 3 inches. Last school year I started off weighing 123 pounds. I took a really bad approach to weight loss and I almost completely stopped eating (about 400 calories a day). I dropped to about 113. I decided I really needed to stop not eating and I began eating again (about 800 calories a day), not a lot and super healthy, but more than I had before. I gained about 2 pounds with this approach and I was still happy. Then around summertime I became eating a few higher calorie foods but never more than 1600 calories a day and probably got up to about 117. I was beginning to start feeling self conscious, but I kept telling myself I was unhealthy last year. I weighed116 at the beginning of this school year and now I weigh about 127. After school started I began "dieting" again, but not nearly as extreme as last year (about 700 calories), but that didn't do a thing. Why is this happening? Did I mess up my metabolism last year? How can I shed the weight because I'm already slipping back into old habits I don't want to go back to! Oh yeah and I'm pretty active I play volleyball. I'm not as active as I was last year, but I try to exercise when I have time.

You're 14: I don't think you should be worrying too much about weight right now. The problem is that you focus on how much you weight or how fat you look when all you should focus on is whether or not you are healthy. What you can do to focus on this is to eat healthy meals, not precisely counting every calorie you take in, because that is also a type of obsession that messes up your mental health. So once more: focus on eating healthy meals and excercise to keep yourself fit, which should cover your physical health. Stop worrying about how slender or not you are or weight and begin focusing on other things like how your eyes shine when you laugh or how your hair looks a little different in the sunlight...there are a lot more things to beauty and being comfortable with yourself than your height and weight. Achieving a moderate state of wellness involves many factors, but all you should really concentrate on is respecting yourself and taking care of your body because it's the only one you'll ever have. don't just eat 700 calories, your body will start to break down muscle and your metabolism will slow way down. you are doing more harm than good. eat 1700 calories and exercise. the extra weight gain would be mostly water weight because your body was deprived of proper nutrition for a while and it is trying to stabilize itself. you have to find the sweet spot for calories and steady weight loss. I know for sure it is not 700 it might be anywhere from 1500-2000 depending on how fast your metabolism is and how much you exercise.
