Overweight 7 year old? weight loss ideas?

Overweight 7 year old? weight loss ideas? Topic: Overweight 7 year old? weight loss ideas?

Question: My little man (first born son) was born premature in 2005. He actually was almost born at 22 weeks gestation. Over the years he has grown...and grown....and grown. At 7 years old now he is almost 5 feet tall and weighs 110 lbs. He is a tremendous kid. Awesome and just a joy to be around. My ex and I have been seperated for 5 years, and in that time our boy goes back and forth. We get along really good and twice a week , we all hang out and talk and laugh. My ex always brings over healthy treats for all three kids, bananas, fresh peaches, honey roasted peanuts. The kids love this and while its not the norm for seperated families to do...we hang out anyway, and all three kids are happy and healthy and know that my ex is there for all of them, and my long time bf the little ones' dad is there for all of them as well. That bit of drama being said, all of the kids are doing great. My big guy is doing great as well, he's just....big. at our house, we try to feed the kids the least amount of processed food as we can. We eat LOTS of fresh fruit, salad, fresh veggies etc. We have our own chickens and only eat our farm eggs. Little man goes to his Dad's for half the week and he eats a lot more processed foods, pizza's, etc.there. Could that just be all the difference in the world as far as his weight is concerned? He should weigh between 57 and 72 pounds, so he is quite a bit over that. I do have an appt set up with his pediatrician to check if there is any physical reason for his weight. It crept up on us slowly, because he was such a teeny little guy in the beginning. We saw the weight gain and originally were happy he was getting bigger. Then he just kept going! We figured it was chubby baby weight and he would have a growth spurt and grow into himself. He just grew to 4.5 feet so quickly, but never lost any of his weight. What kind of a 'diet' would you put a 7 yo on? Can you put a 7yo on a diet? We go for walks at my house, nearly every day. The walks range from a mile to 2 miles every day. We live far out in the country and usually pick flowers and blueberries and rasberries on the way home, so the kids arent just pushed to hurry or anything like that. As parents, what would you do with one child that is quite overweight, when the other 2 kids are not? lol @ big hammer! what a dorky answer! Still laughing!!! Seriously though....no need for a test. We know! :) Thanks though! LOL still laughing!

Getting him checked out is a good idea - if you say he's eating fairly healthy, it's strange for him to be so large. Make sure he's getting lots of exercise. No snacks, no matter how much he complains. Keep no pop/soda in the house. None for anyone. Soda is the biggest cause of obesity. (No diet soda either. Thin people don't drink diet soda. Ever noticed?) Losing weight is really the same for anybody. Eat less and move more. Good luck. It's great that you're on this when he's still young. It breaks my heart to see obese children. It should be considered a form of child abuse. Good for you for being cognizant of it.

The best way to get her weight down is to see a doctor and a dietitian and not only change HER diet but everyones in the household. You all need to eat healthier. If it's not in the home, she won't eat it. I'm not opposed to eating out some, but obviously this is becoming a big problem that will follow her into her adult years. Not only that but this is putting her at risk for many diseases, especially type II diabetes. You need to make drastic changes to her diet now. It could be genes, but it could just be her diet and lack of exercise. A 6 year old shouldn't be too tired to go to the park or to play outside after school. Do you have a swingset? Does she ever have active playtime?

1 - Do not put a 7 year old on a diet without the guidance of a medical professional. A child's nutritional needs are quite different from an adults. 2 - Take him to a doctor and discuss your concerns. He is certainly heavy, but he is also remarkable tall for his age. You cannot rely on a growth chart for this child, a doctor needs to see him. Unless there are concerns that his weight poses a health risk, the most common advice would be along the lines of "watch what he eats, not a lot of sugar or snacking, cut back on TV time, get up and exercise, and wait for him to grow into the weight". And number 3 - Both parents/households need to be on the same page here. Easier said than done.

Easiest way to help a child lose weight is for the entire family to do it. Just make foods that are healthy and limit snacking. You are the parent and the child is still young so you control their eating habits. Instead of cookies for a snack, do carrot sticks. Don't buy fast food. Keep up with the walks.

1) playing outside a lot, daily. Get him to the park, get him in sports, get him playing outside every single day. Or at least taking a walk, riding a scooter, riding a bike, etc. Every day. 2) Limit the processed foods, more fruit in the summer. Limit portion size at meals and only fruits and veggies for snacks. For the entire family, not just for him. Everyone can eat healthy. He shouldn't be on a 'diet', he needs to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle - for life. Diets are short term, he needs to learn how to be healthy for life.

For his height,It sounds like his height and weight are in proportion, but,i can`t see him.I will tell you,it takes fat to burn fat.Good fats like fish oil, flax, primrose, pumpkin seed oil.The zone diet, tells you how to get the correct ratio of good fats, protein and good carbs. When the ratio is correct,it turns off the cravings.Chromium oicolinate also helps with cravings. If he goes to his dad`s and dad is uncooperative,I don`t know how to fix that.Get him into weight lifting,at least,he will build mussle.Maybe he has underactive thyroid.Look at books by David Brownstein M.D.Some coconut oil helps boost metabolism, and iodine is needed for underactive thyroid.Go very slow with coconut oil as it can cause healing reactions.

everyone starting to eat a better diet and group sports. having a video game system that gets the player up off the couch also helps. talk to his doctor about ways to help but the main thing i will tell you is to not do or say anything that makes your son think he is bad or ugly because he is bigger than maybe he should be. even little boys get eating disorders, age and gender mean nothing to that illness.

Hey. Just Eat healthy and balanced meals. First let me just tell you that skipping meals or not eating much doesn't make you loose weight. You want to loose weight in a moderate fashion so that your body doesn't gain all the weight back as soon as you begin to eat normally. Drink lots of water; Eat every 2-2.5 hours, small meals, 5-7 times A day. This speeds up your metabolism. Reduce your caloric intake to *1,200 calories a day and your total fat grams to less than 35 grams. I'm Vegetarian and I barely work out and I’m super thin; what you should do is WALK...it is better than running b/c it makes your ankles weak over time. If you do run, jog on the treadmill with no incline. Try the bike too. A thin person is this way because it is 90% of what we eat and 10% workout/exercise. Choose as well if you want to work out more, or eat less if you want or a combo. But remember to choose Which one will work for you and if you do decide to not workout then view the links I will provide to eat the necessary requirements the body needs. Anyway, With cardio, the belly is burning fat b/c you are sweating all over-Not a lot of people know that walking burns fat around the mid section. If you’re into sit ups, you should try AT LEAST to do 3 sets of 10 on a mat. If you’re not familiar with sit ups, just ask personal trainers at a gym one day-you can just walk in and ask them-they wouldn't hesitate to answer. ALSO IMPORTANT: Do not use incline o.k.with bike, treadmill, etc. ok? -because your thighs will get bigger. If you already have bigger thigh Muscles they will continue to maintain the "bigness" and or increase in size. But hey, if you want to burn fat And GAIN A LITTLE MUSCLE TOO then try a little resistance!! Cardio also burns the extra little fat that is covering muscles so yay for cardio! Tapes of Cardio Burning or fat burning could work in your case too Or Buy a treadmill or bike so that this will always be available for you to do...join a gym if u want too.   Being a person that eats meat or dairy once in a while is the best to try right now for you. Or at least cut down on red meat. Red meat are  foods that take so long to digest which would make you weigh more on scale than you should. I’m not trying to promote becoming a vegetarian, but giving this a try could help with swifter weight loss. Drinking lots of tea like white, chamomile, and green will help too. Having a high protein diet is good in loosing fat, and keeping lean muscles, because usually the more protein is in a food-the less calories from fat and bad fat (trans fat and saturated fat)..I eat lots of beans (Lima, Pinto, kidney, black, navy- RAW; never in can(but that is just my choice-if you wanted canned its NO PROBLEM). No sugar applesauce is great too and a great snack-find it in jar form or mini cases. Try Quinoa or flaxseeds or something nutty texture like Oatmeal, old fashioned rolled oat too, you can find Quinoa in your grain, beans, or nut aisles. You can sprinkle these foods on all veggies and salads. I also eat lots of salad with tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, and carrots! Eat salad with no dressing too or dressing that has 50 calories per 2 tablespoons. Try Bear Naked products-particularly what I only eat of this product are 2 of the many which are Bear Naked's Fit, Vanilla Almond Crunch and Bear Naked's Fit Triple Berry Crunch. The entire kosher aisle has many products to munch on like Matzos that go up to 150 calories per cracker. I like the 100-110 calories per cracker. Try Edamame (soy beans) too! - Tons of protein! (Veggie section even though it’s a bean loll)-get the non gmo kind. Dairy, hnmm well cheese-I'd suggest you go for yogurt over cheese and id cut back off the cheese for awhile because of the high saturated fat which is fat that is difficult for the body to break down thus causing unnecessary places for fat to sit on body because it doesn't know how to appropriately break it down. Try a yogurt called "Fage 0" or "Chobani" yogurt. ALL vegetables are fun and easy to cook-broccoli, asparagus, yams, pumpkin, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower-and you can do whatever you want with it (boil, steam, roast, stir fry, baked...etc.) Try having all of your meals with colors of vegetables. For example, if you make grilled chicken then make sure there are tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and or carrots on that plate! Oh hey, when you are buying bread or wheat, if the label doesn't say 100% whole wheat then chances are that it is not whole wheat. Make sure you get the 100% whole wheat ones (it will say “WHOLE” wheat as its first ingredient) on foods and carbohydrates aka grains. There is also absolutely no sugar in Matzos btw (sugar if not burned turns into fat). I bake Matzos for about 2 minutes and then break them up into squares so it looks like chips! Oh, did I mention they are extremely delicious!? Miso soups and brown rice are great too and cut back or limit your refined foods. Hope this helps and email me anytime.
