I do tons of aerobics but I have hit a plateau.
I used to do lots of bodybuilding, but that was to isolate one muscle and grow it.
What exercises should I do to lose weight? Just the basics like squats and deadlifts and stuff? Is there a good book that spells this out?

I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes.
Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight.
First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising...
This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart.
However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at http://theweightlossplace .com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it's the best pill I've tried and I've tried cupboards full. Now this doesn't mean you have to follow my foot steps but I've successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day.

Cardio is good, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to give us the greatest results. Have you tried incorporating weights in your workout? They help bring strength and resistance in your workouts and give you better results. There are also other programs I know that can help you meet your fitness goals. There is no BEST option for weight loss its all about how you do it. Its about what you eat when you eat it how big the portion is and exercises you do after it Dont just do one thing to a mixture of things, You keep doing the same thing your body will get used to it. You do different things this will shock your body and help maintain a steady level of weight loss. For example Do treadmill 10 mins 1 min walking 2 mins running then week after do do the same but for 15 mins then increase your running time. I Used to be an boxer but I ended up gaining to much weight after I stopped. So currently I am doing it again and its coming off me slowly but surely. You dont lose weight overnight it takes time and there will be points where you dont lose any at all but dont get disheartened it Will happen if you stick at it. Good luck

If you have hit a plateau, you might want to consider cutting back a couple of hundred calories a day. Both bodybuilding and aerobics are good for fat burning. Bodybuilding builds muscle which burns fat and aerobics burn stored fat after moderate exercise for 30 minutes. A good book, I believe the best book out there, is Weight Training Made Easy, by Joyce Verdal, Phd. Don't shy away from that book because it is written by a woman. She knows her stuff.

I just had my second baby and running helped me lose most of the post-pregnancy weight. I usually run a 3 mile stretch at least 3 times a week.
I used to spin (indoor biking) too and that kept the weight off. If you get a good instructor, it's a lot of fun and is an intense workout!

You listed the right kind of exercises because they use several muscle groups (compound movements) and boost metabolism, which help w/ weight loss. Check out this guy's site and books.

Exercise will NOT help you lose weight. Exercise is good though as it will help you become / stay / keep healthy.
