High calorie cat food?

High calorie cat food? Topic: High calorie cat food?

Question: Okay so my cat is naturally skinny but he has been really underweight lately. I told him to vet's to be kenneled for a few days because their where people working on my tub. I also took my other cat there too. They both came back kind of skinny because they didn't eat much but the girl gain her weight. The boy isn't gaining the weight back that he should be. It has been about a month. I increased his cat food and give him canned food twice a day but he is still not gaining anything. What brands of cat food out there are high in calories and can help him gain back the weight that he needs to? Note: there is nothing wrong with him. He is a perfectly healthy cat besides the fact that he is underweight.

First, how do you know there's nothing wrong with him? Any weight loss in a cat, whether skinny or not, needs to be vet-checked. Is it possible he picked up a worm or parasite from the kennel? This is common in kennels, because it just takes one flea. There are other causes of weight loss, as well. And in male cats especially, you don't want them losing too much weight because it leads to a condition called hepatic lipidosis, which results in rising liver enzymes. You need to know the cause of the weight loss before treating it. Prescription foods like Science Diet A/D are fine for adding weight, but they're so nutrition packed you can't feed them for more than a week (per the instructions on the can). And even if you fed this for a week, whatever is causing the weight loss would kick back in again.

If you are on a calorie counting diet it is. If you are on a low fat diet a hamburger and fries is not good. Calories are all the same whatever their source, the thing is if you eat low calorie foods you can eat more of them. A large hamburger and fries is about 1200 calories which is the daily limit for a lot of people that are trying to cut back.

Contact your vet. They often have special formulated cat foods that are used for cats who are recovering from surgery, and need a calorie packed food. If her kidneys are fully functioning, then consider a kitten chow for the extra calories. It is at least worth a try. If she has kidney problems, then the extra protein would cause some problems. But one question. Weight loss in elderly cats is often related to thyroid problems, so has that been ruled out? If her thyroid is on high output, she is burning calories faster than she can take them in, and treatment is relatively simple. A blood test will tell you that answer.

EVO dry food is very high quality, and very high in calories. Make sure you don't overshoot your goals and end up with overweight cats. You could simply feed more of what you are feeding now to increase calorie intake. Wet food is better for cats, but it isn't very high in calories because of the high water content. If you cat is underweight, and you can't keep weight on him, then he might not be healthy. He may have the start of a condition that hasn't affected his personality or energy level yet. A call to the vet is justified.

Has your cat been fully examined? Bloodwork to check for thyroid issues, fecal to check for worms? Some cats may be slim but if his weight is so low you can see bones protruding then that is a strong sign something is wrong. If increasing his food intake does not seem to be helping then it’s time to seek help from a professional. There are many foods out there to help with weight but the most important thing you need to know is why he is not gaining weight. Also remember it is not healthy for anyone cat, human, whatever to suddenly gain or lose a lot of weight. For a cat, even if he gains one pound that is a lot of progress.

Kitten chow is packed with calories, or you could supplement what they already eat by adding KMR milk replacer. It can be sprinkled on their food or mixed and given as a treat. It is normally used for kittens and nursing mothers. It's great for weight gain. I've used it on an elderly cat before to help her maintain a higher weight.
